Math
Today we continued our discussion in grade 4 on recognizing multiplication problems. Remember if a problem involves equal groups, chances are you can use multiplication to solve it. If a problem has the words "times as many/much" it is multiplication.

So far we have shown multiplication as equal groups, arrays and on a number line.

The numbers that you multiply are called FACTORS. The answer to a multiplication question is called the PRODUCT.

In grade 5 we reviewed 3-digit by 1-digit multiplication. You can decompose one factor (expanded form) and multiply each part by the other factor then add the products. This is review for grade 5, but grade 4 you have to know how to do this as well!

276          200            70             6
x  8           x 8           x 8          x 8
               1600         560           48

1600
  560
 + 48
2208

You can also do this in one step:
276
x  8
1600
  560
 + 48
2208

The other way we discussed is the standard algorithm (pencil and paper).

Here is a video explaining how to do this:

Remember Time Test on Thursday.

It is important to estimate when finding the products to make sure our answers are reasonable. A good way to estimate in is finding a high and low estimate. If your product is between those numbers, then you are probably correct.

For example:
744 x 3            Low estimate: 700 x 3 = 2100
                        High estimate: 800 x 3 = 2400

You know your actual product is somewhere between the two estimates, close to half-way because 744 is almost half-way between 700 and 800.

Religion
Today we discussed the parable of the Prodigal Son. What message was Jesus trying to teach? Here are the two versions we watched today:

Have you ever had the feelings of the older brother?

We will continue our tableaus tomorrow.

Science
We wrapped up our discussion of the respiratory system.

Bring home your notes on the Respirator system and your foldable to study how air flows through the respirator system and how gas is exchanged in the alveoli. When you are ready, you can complete your lung model task.

Literacy
Today we practiced making inferences and recognizing the features of historical fiction using "Storm at Batoche".

What was the real time in the past?
How were the characters, James and Louis, authentic?
What details gave us information about that time in Canadian history?
What were the problems specific to the time and place?
What historical information was given at the end?

Remember to think of two characteristics of James and Louis. We will look for proof from the text and practice writing an open answer next.

Do you understand the thoughts of the author:

"Louis lived in a time when differences between people were more important than what they might share, when few could look beyond the name of a thing and see into the heart of the matter."

How were James and Louis different than many of their time?
