Math
Today we finished our lesson on estimating elapsed time. Our strategy was to round each time to the nearest quarter of an hour: __:00 or __:15 or __:30 or __:45.

Even when you are estimating elapsed time, you must use a strategy to find the time between. I modeled counting up. For example if you started an activity at 11:15 am and finished at 2:30 pm....

11:15 am -----45 minutes ----- 12:00 pm ----2 hours----- 2:00 pm----30 minutes ----- 2:30

So the elapsed time is 2 hours and 75 minutes (take out 60 minutes to make another hour) so the elapsed time is 3 hours 15 minutes.

There are many ways to count up. We will talk about them this week.

Think about this question...

Construction workers are repairing a road.

Their job will take 7 hours and 15 minutes.

They want to avoid working at heavy traffic times.

When should the workers start and end?

How did you decide?

And this question....

Grade 5 we will be telling time to the nearest second.

Think about this question....

What is a time between 3:42 and 3:43?

Religion
Today we talked about prayer. Even though we know how to keep our bodies healthy, we sometimes choose to eat foods that are not very healthy, or we choose not to exercise.

This is similar with our spiritual health: we understand and know the benefits of prayer but we sometimes forget, get distracted, or feel we are too tired.

We renew our relationship with God when we pray.

Think about the symbol you would like to draw on your quilt patch that reminds us of the importance of daily prayer in our lives.

Thank you to students who brought a picture reflecting the verse from the book of Matthew. Please bring in your picture for tomorrow.

Science
Most students completed their investigation on absorption in the small intestine. It is important that you know how to write a procedure. Procedures are numbered instructions on how to complete an investigation. They use very few words.

Which paper towel absorbed water better? We will interpret our results tomorrow.

Thank you to students who reported on hepatitis, pancreatitis and gall stones.

Literacy
We read the Lost Spike today. What was the lost spike? Why was it so important? Think about these questions for tomorrow....
  • What do you think were the hardest challenges for Chinese immigrants in building the Canadian railway? Why?
  • How did you feel while learning about the experiences of the Chinese workers? Why?
  • Why is it important to read historical fiction stories about Canada?
