Literacy
This week is "Bullying Awareness Week". The theme of the week is belonging. As a class today we took "The Pledge". Everyone signed the class copy and it will posted in the classroom all year long. We also reviewed the definition of bullying:

Bullying is unfair and one-sided. It happens when someone keeps hurting, frightening, threatening or leaving someone out on purpose.

Explain to a parent what the difference is between someone who is being unkind and someone who is bullying. Remember, both should be reported.

We talked about drawing conclusions when we make inferences. After we listened to "True Colors" we came up with the following messages of the song:
  • Everyone is different and you shouldn't be ashamed of who you are
  • If someone is bullying you don't be afraid to stand up for yourself
  • Don't listen to people who make you feel bad about who you are
  • You are not alone in this world, don't be afraid to ask for help
When you listen to the song, find proof in the lyrics or in the music video to support your message. You only need to pick one message.

Math
In grade 4 we looked at the properties of quadrilaterals. For example.....
How are a rectangle and square the same?
How are a square and rhombus the same?
How are a parallelogram and a trapezoid the same?
How are a square and rhombus different?
How are a parallelogram and rectangle different?
How are a kite and rectangle the same?

Think about the following properties:
Types of angles
Number of equal sides
Number of parallel sides
Lines of symmetry
Diagonals

I will be marking notebooks tonight so you can finish your turn questions tomorrow.

Grade 5 we looked at polygons. You should know the meaning of the following:
regular polygon
irregular polygon
convex polygon
concave polygon
triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon, nonagon, decagon

Science
In Sound today we talked about high and low sounds or the pitch of a sound. From your exploration you should have concluded:
A thin elastic makes a higher sound (vibrates faster)
A short elastic makes a high sound (vibrates faster)
A thick elastic makes a low sound (vibrates faster)
A long elastic makes a low sound (vibrates faster)
A loose elastic makes a lower sound than a tight elastic

The faster the vibrations, the greater the FREQUENCY. Frequency is a measure of the number of wave cycles (vibrations)in one second. The more cycles the higher the sound. Notice the amplitude or loudness is the same for both sounds.
