Congratulations to all students on doing a FABULOUS job on your student led conferences! Thank you to all parents for listening, encouraging and celebrating with your children.
Math
On Thursday we reviewed all of our mental math strategies for addition:
Making friendly numbers (multiplies of 10)
e.g. 36 + 34 = ?
In the ones place value look for pairs of numbers that add to 10 (6 + 4)
30 + 30 + 10 = 70
Doubles or Near Doubles
e.g. 29 + 28 = 30 + 30 = 60 - 3 = 57
Decomposing numbers (expanded form) then adding each place.
57 + 28
50 + 20 + 15 = 85
Adding in Chunks
e.g. 46 + 18 = 46 + 10 = 56 + 4 = 60 + 4 = 64
Compensation
45 + 18 = 43 + 20 = 63 (take 2 from the 45 and give it to the 18 to make 20)
Subtraction strategies are next.
In grade 5 we also began our discussion of REGULAR POLYGONS
Why are all these polygons regular?
What is the difference between concave vs convex polygons? Because concave polygons have "dents", they have at least one angle greater than 180 degrees. Convex polygons have angles that are all less than 180 degrees.
We also wrote a few quadrilateral and triangle riddles. Try these:

Science
In Science we reviewed volume and learned about AMPLITUDE. What is amplitude?
Amplitude is the height of a sound wave. How are amplitude and volume related? The greater the amplitude the ___________ the volume of a sound. Think of the wave as the back and forth movement of a vibration.
Tomorrow (Monday) we will take the Pledge. This week is Bullying Awareness Week.
