Math
Today we started our new unit Geometry. Our focus for this week is angles.

The size of an angle is determined by how wide the arc of the angle. In grade four we compare angles to benchmark angles: right angle, half a right angle and straight angle. By the end of grade four, you should know how to compare any angle to these three benchmark angles.

In grade 5 we talked about types of angles. We need to know this because we will be using these classifications when we talk about triangles. An angle less than a right angle is an acute angle. An angle that is greater than a right angle but less than a straight angle is an obtuse angle. We also talked about the units we use to measure angles, degrees Unfortunately, I cannot use the symbol for degrees on the blog. It is a superscript (small open circle). A right angle is 90 degrees, an acute angles is between 0 degrees and 90 degrees and an obtuse angle is between 90 degrees and 180 degrees (straight angle). Knowing this helps us check the measurements.

We began talking about using a PROTRACTOR to measure the size on an angle.

Here's the link to how to measure using a protractor:

The most confusing part of measuring, is knowing which scale or set of numbers to use. It is actually more difficult to measure an angle than construct an angle. The links below are VERY good for reading measurements. Grade 4 you don't need to know this, but it will make your life a lot easier next year if you do!

We will continue working on our actions tasks and practice questions tomorrow.

Writing
Writing workshop for the rest of the week. Do you have enough gathered information to write the following expository paragraphs:

  • Responsibilities of mayor / Councillor
  • Sacramental
  • Compare / Contrast Old and New Testaments
  • 3 Paragraphs on the City of London

Social Studies
We will have a test next Wednesday (not Halloween)
The focus will be the election including candidates, winners, voting and how local governments communicate with citizens. The last assignment involve formulating a critical thinking questions about an current issue in London. What issues affect your neighbourhood? the entire City of London? Think about it.....

Science is on hold until Social Studies is complete. Hopefully this week.

Learning Skills
Today we talked about INITIATIVE. The fact that you are reading this blog shows that you do have INITIATIVE. Make sure you monitor your learning goal throughout the week.

Reading
Today you were given a book to practice reading for THURSDAY. On Thursday you will read your book with your reading group. Afterwards you will be given a test. There will be 10 multiple choice questions and 1 written question. The written question will be about the features of non-fiction texts. Please identify the different features as you read. Why are they important?

Are you ready for your spider STEM challenge?
