Math

Grade 5 worked independently writing math riddles and information about numbers. Remember to look at some of the ideas on the yellow pages to help. Complete your Action Task (if it isn't done) and Your Turn Questions.

Grade 4 began Patterns today, specifically repeating patterns. How do you know a pattern repeats? It has CORE that repeats. A core is the smallest repeating part. A repeating pattern can be geometric (shapes) or numeric (numbers).

For example:
What is the core of this repeating pattern?
1, 2, 2, 3, 1, 2, 2, 3, 1, 2, 2, 3....

We can make predictions about patterns based on the position of the terms of the pattern. Term 1 is 1, term 2 is 2, term 3 is 2 and term 4 is 3. Writing it vertically helps you make predictions

1, 2, 2, 3
1  2  3  4  Term numbers
5  6  7  8

What will the 25th term be? Well, we know the 24th term will be 3 because 24 is a multiple  of 3. So the 25th term will be the term after 3 which is 1 because 25 is one more than 24.

What will be the 69th term of this pattern?
What will be the 100th term of this pattern?

In your Action Task it asks to write a pattern that has the same term for odd terms. If your pattern has a core of two and the first number or shape of your pattern will be an odd term.

For example:
8, 3, 8, 3, 8, 3....

All of the odd terms will have a value of 8.

We never know for sure if a pattern is repeating because a number or shape could be added to make a long core. However, if the core repeats 3 times, it is probably a repeating pattern.

For example:
3, 4, 7, 8, 3, 4, 7, 8, 3, 4, 7, 8....

Seems to repeat. But if I added 9 after the last 8, then we can't tell. Only the person who is writing the pattern knows for sure!

Religion
We continued our discussion of sacramentals. If you did not find 3 facts about your sacramentals, please make sure you have them tomorrow. You will be writing an expository paragraph about your sacramental tomorrow if the weather isn't conducive to running.

Social Studies
We spent a bit of time during Social Studies talking about "Orange Shirt Day". The blog post yesterday had a bit of background information on it. Share with a parent the story "When I Was Eight".

We have two more "information" lessons on local government before we delve into the upcoming municipal election. Keep bringing in those pamphlets.

Listen to a bit of the candidates running for mayor talking about transportation:
