Math
Grade 5s described and created growing shape patterns. I think everyone understood that each shape in a growing shape pattern is made from the shape before. You add onto the shape the same way each time. We can use our knowledge of the number and location in a shape to predict larger terms. Showing 5 terms of a shape pattern usually is enough to see the pattern. No need to draw the actual shape of a term that is quite large. Describing it is okay.

For example if your growing shape pattern looked like this for your Action Task, find the connection between the number of squares in the column on the right of the shape and the term number. The two columns before are one less so they are easy to figure out.

Term 1 3 squares
Term 2 4 squares
Term 3 5 squares
Term 4 6 squares
Term 5 7 squares

You should realized the number of squares in the column on the right is two more than the term number. So the 20th term would have 22 squares in the columns on the right. Moving left the next column would have 21 and the shortest column would have 20. Some of you actually drew the shape. That's perfectly fine as long as you can explain your strategy.

How does this pattern grow? What will the next 2 terms look like?

Grade 4s should have completed their riddles and information about numbers questions.

Math calendars are due tomorrow because of the short week! There were a few questions you had to do at home.

It is very important to write down your homework as it is written on the homework board. Do not just write "Math". Your parents would like to support you at home, but they can't if they don't understand what you need to do.

Religion
Most students wrote a first draft of an expository paragraph about a sacramental. Most students had enough information, but many did not follow the format for writing a paragraph. Next step... draft #2

Social Studies
Today we talked a little about how to find the main idea of a non-fiction text. Finding the most important word or words is a good strategy. Use these clues to find important words:
  • Title
  • Topic sentence
  • Repeated words
  • Photos
You better not do what in Mississauga or you could get a $5000 fine? What is the BYLAW? We will continue our discussions on services, bylaws and revenue of local governments next week.

Cross Country
Tomorrow is our Run with the Nighthawks / Terry Fox Run. Please be prepared to be outside for about two hours. Don't forget to think about who you will be running for and bring a toonie for Terry. Come to school ready to run but bring your uniform for the afternoon.

You may show your support for our First Nations Communities by wearing an orange shirt tomorrow in the afternoon.
