Math
During the week we solved some math riddles. When you know some things about a number, you can figure out other things about it.

For example, suppose you know that a number has four digits and that it can be written as a number of hundreds.

That means you also know these things about the number:

It is 1000 or greater, since it has four digits.

It is less than 10 000, since it has only four digits.

Its ones and tens digits are 0, since it can be written as
a number of hundreds:  ___ 00
  • It is even, because the ones digit is 0.

 •  Its expanded form has only two parts, because there are 0 tens and 0 ones:
 _____ thousands + ________ hundreds

100 or more tens blocks or $10 bills
    -   1000 or more ones blocks or $1 coins

•  It can be modelled with as many as 18 counters (9900) or
as few as 1 counter (1000) on a place-value chart.

Try this grade fours:

These two facts are true about a four-digit number:
    -   It is greater than 12 hundreds.
    -  If you modelled its standard form with base ten blocks, you’d use 14 blocks.
    a)  List three numbers it could be.
    b)  List three numbers it could not be.

Try this grade fives:

Suppose you know these things about a number:
• It’s between 33 000 and 52 500.
• It cannot be written as £ hundreds.
• When you read the number, you say the word “forty.”
a)  Name three or more numbers it could be.
b) Name three or more numbers it could not be.

On Friday we continued our discussion on unit fractions. Remember a unit fraction is a fraction with a numerator of one. Your challenge was to divide a pan of brownies evenly among different numbers of friends. Dividing the rectangle into fourths was pretty easy. Most groups had three different ways. Do you remember how to divide a rectangle into four equal triangles? Dividing into eighths was also fairly easy. Most of you divided the fourths in half to get eighths. Is there a way to do triangle eighths? Some things you should have noticed:
  • 1 one-fourth was the same as 2 one-eighths.
  • 2 one-fourths was the same as 4 one-eighths.
  • 3 one-fourths was the same as 6 one-eighths.

The final challenge was divide the pan of brownies to share it among 10 friends. The folding took a bit more thinking. A few students realized that if you folded the brownies into fifths, tens would just be half of that. To get fifths, you had to make a unit fraction that was SMALLER than fourths. After a few tries several groups were successful. So the final thing you should have noticed was that the LARGER the denominator of a unit fraction, the smaller that fraction is.

Our next unit in Math next week is NUMERIC PATTERNS.

Literacy
We linked our unit on Canadian Government and Citizenship to reading and writing this week. When we answer an "open question" based on information we have read, there is a format that we follow to help us, APE.

We will be using this strategy throughout the year. It is a strategy used in grades 4 to 8.

We also began writing EXPOSITORY paragraphs.

Each group is using information from the textbook to write about the responsibilities of either a mayor or councillor. Most students had a good background of the structure of a paragraph. Remember your hamburger:

We also discussed effective leads or hooks. One group had a very clever hook. The easiest hooks to  write are question hooks or interesting information hooks. Take a good look at the anchor chart in the classroom for ideas.

Religion
We continued our discussion of how we are called "to be one". Remember St. Teresa of Avila's prayer.... "Christ has no body but you...." St. Paul explained this to the early Christians in Corinth (Letters to the Corinthians). Why were letters so important to the early Church? Have you written a note, email, text etc. to someone you don't see often to remind them of their talents and how they can use their talents to help others?

Learning Skills
Look at the self-regulation goal you set at the beginning of the week. How did you do? Have you met your goal or do you need to continue working on it?

Media
You were given your first media assignment, a slide show describing who you are. You can access your Google docs at home.

Create a slide show that shows who you are:
  • Interests
  • Learning Style
  • Accomplishments
  • Values
  • Strengths
  • Influences

Possible things to include:
Photos, videos, pictures, symbols, words and phrases, music.....

Here are just some different learning styles:

You can also be a combination of different learning styles!

Physical Education
Keep training for cross country. Our Terry Fox Run is Thursday, September 27th. Please bring a toonie for Terry.

Permission forms for the cross country meet are due. It's just around the corner!

Reminders:
  • Complete Mathletics assignments (booklet and online)
  • Make sure your gym clothes are at school every day.
  • Bring in any candidate pamphlets. Voters need to know where candidates stand on issues before they vote.

Thank you to all families who were able to attend the "Meet and Greet" on Thursday. It was wonderful meeting families for the first time and welcoming families back from previous years.
