Image result for happy victoria day

Happy birthday, Queen Victoria!

The British queen was born on May 24, 1819. She was a reigning monarch (Queen) for 63 years, seven months and two days.

Victoria Day was declared a Canadian holiday by the government in 1845.
At that time, it was celebrated with picnics, parades, sporting tournaments, fireworks and cannon salutes.
When Queen Victoria died in 1901, Canada’s parliament officially named the holiday Victoria Day.

It was decided that the day would be celebrated on May 24th each year (or on May 25th if the 24th fell on a Sunday).

Math
We have more more quiz on Data Management on Thursday. It will be on range, mode and median for grade 4 and range, mode, median and mean for grade 5.

Question #4 in Your Turn question for grade 4 was an interesting question:

For which set of data below do you think that the median is a good summary of the data? Why?

    Set 1: 3, 6, 10, 20, 20, 50

    Set 2: 5, 7, 1, 2, 1, 4

    Set 3: 50, 40, 50, 50, 20, 20

The median is the middle number. If the median is in the middle of numbers that are close to it, then it is a good median.

Let's look at Set 1:
The median is 10. It is the number in the middle but is it really in the middle of the range of numbers? The range is about 50. A number in the middle of 3 and 50 is about 27 which isn't close the 10, so 10 isn't really a good summary of the data.

Set 3:
20, 20, 40, 50, 50, 50 The median is 45 which isn't really close to the 20 values.

Set 2:
1, 1, 2, 4, 5. 7 The median is 3 which is close to  the middle of 1 and 7, so it's a good summary of the data.

Not only should you be able to find the mode, median and mean, you should be able to create a set of numbers given the mode, median or mean.

Example:

Create a set of numbers with a mode of 5, a median of 7 and no data values of 7. There are many possibilities.
Example: 2, 3, 5, 5, 6, 8, 9. 10, 12, 15

My strategies was to start with the median. I knew that 7 is between 6 and 8 so I made 6 and 8 my middle numbers.

___, ____, ____, ____ 6, 8, ___, ____, ___, ____

I knew I needed an even number of data values because 7 is not a data value. Next I repeated 5 twice to make it the mode. I could have repeated it three times.

____, ____, 5, 5, 6, 8, ____, _____, ____, ____

Lastly, I just inserted random numbers that were less than 5 and greater than 8. I knew I couldn't repeat any more numbers because then there would be another mode.

You also should be able to find the range, mode, median and mean from a stem and leaf plot:
