Math
Today grade fours looked at division as sharing and grouping. The answer to a division question is called the quotient. The number of groups or the number in each group is the divisor and the number of things you are sharing is the dividend.

You can write a division question three different ways:

In a SHARING problem you know the number of groups and the total number of things.
Example: The Easter Bunny has 36 chocolates to share equally with 9 children. How many chocolates does each child get?

In a GROUPING problem you know the number in each group and the total number of things.
Example: The Easter Bunny has 36 chocolates. He wants to give each child 4 chocolates. How many children can he give chocolates?

In grade 5 we talked about 2-digit multiplication. We used base ten blocks to represent the numbers we are multiplying and our knowledge of area of rectangles.

This rectangle shows 23 x 14

You know it is multiplication because it is really just an array. 14 rows of 23 blocks.

Step 1: Find the areas of the four rectangles
Step 2: Add the areas to get the product.

Area 1: 20 x 10 = 200 (orange hundred blocks)
Area 2: 10 x 3 = 30 (blue vertical tens blocks)
Area 3: 20 x 4 = 80 (blue horizontal tens blocks)
Area 4: 4 x 3 = 12 (yellow ones blocks)

The total area is 100 + 30 + 80 + 12 = 322

We can use a simple rectangle to show this instead of drawing the base ten blocks.

What would be the answer to 26 x 37?

Science
We continued our discussion of the circulatory system by looking at the smoking industry. Think about your arguments for the debate tomorrow. You are arguing for and against the ban against cigarettes displays.

Sometimes in a debate you must argue perspectives that are not necessarily the ones you believe. There are usually some positives and negatives to most issues.

For the diagram of the heart. Behind each part of the heart you write what is going on there.
Top left panel
The right atrium receives deoxygenated (oxygen poor)  blood from the body. Blood flows from the right atrium into the right ventricle

Bottom left panel
The right ventricle pumps the deoxygenated blood through the pulmonary artery to the lungs.

Top right panel
At the lungs the blood gets rid of carbon dioxide and picks up oxygen. The pulmonary vein carries the oxygenated blood to the left atrium. Blood flows from the left atrium into the left ventricle.

Bottom right panel
The left ventricle pumps the oxygenated blood through the aorta and to the body.

You must complete your exit ticket on your lung model by Wednesday. This is the question on your exit ticket:

·        Write what the parts of your model represents in the human body.

balloon (inside bottle):  _____________________

balloon (on the bottom) : ____________________

straw:  __________________________________

plastic bottle: _____________________________

·        Describe in detail how to make your model work.
·        Compare it to what really happens when you breathe.

Literacy
Today we began our novel study "The Breadwinner". We will read the Forward to the novel and the rest of chapter 1 tomorrow. Question to think about...

Why was Parvanna so worried about the Taliban discovering that she could read?

You can see that the chador mentioned in the book is similar to the other garments we talked about today.

Who are the Taliban?

The Taliban are an  extreme and highly conservative Islamic militia that impose Sharia law, including strict codes of behavior and the suppression of women's rights. The Taliban ruled large parts of Afghanistan as the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, with Kandahar as the capital,  for five years from September 1996 until December 2001 when it was overthrown by the American-led invasion of Afghanistan following the 9/11 attacks. The Taliban resistance continues to the present day.

Reminders:

  • Gym clothes for tomorrow.
  • Shrek tickets, t-shirt and best wishes orders.
