Today in both grades we practiced writing numbers using words. Grade fives tried very hard to find a number fact for a three-digit number and two four-digit numbers (one greater than 5000, one less). Some of you found it very challenging. Perhaps a fact from the list below might trigger an idea:
- Length of the border between Canada and USA
- Weight of a blue whale
- Distance from London to Ottawa
- Number of seats at Budweiser Gardens
- Cost of a new IPhone
- Cost of a flight to Australia
- Population of pandas in the wild
- Cost of a 55 inch LED television
- The age of the Great Wall of China
- The age of the Great Pyramids in Egypt
Make sure you write each fact in a complete sentence using number words.
Grade fours, you learned how to write a cheque. Keep finding different items to purchase that are between $100 and $1000. PRACTICE WRITING YOUR NAME IN CURSIVE WRITING. You will need to know how to sign your name, even if you never write a cheque in the digital world. A cheque uses both standard and word forms of a number. If you don't know your complete address, find out. This is also very important to know.
Here is the link to the video explaining the parts of a cheque:

Complete five cheques for tomorrow. Happy shopping!

Social Studies
Today we talked about MUNICIPALITIES. A municipality is an area with its own government. Some areas have regional municipalities to help share the cost of services. For example, the region of York has nine municipalities.
We also talked about jurisdiction. It is the power to make decisions and laws for an area. A local government cannot pass laws that go against higher level of governments.
What decisions were made in the school area over the summer? These traffic bylaws will help keep students safe.
While we were reading, we noted several characteristics of non-fiction texts. One of our Literacy goals is to identify the characteristics of non-fiction texts and tell how they help us understand a text. Some features are very important when summarizing or finding the main idea of non-fiction texts.
