Math
In both grades we have been discussing different ways to rename and represent numbers. The grade fours will work with whole numbers to 10 000 while the grade fives will work with whole numbers to 100 000.
The proportional reasoning you use when describing numbers different ways is very important. For example, thousands are 10 times as big as hundreds, hundreds are 10 times as big as tens, thousands are 100 times as big as tens.

Our learning goals so far:

I can describe a number as a number of ten thousands (grade 5), thousands, hundreds or as a number of tens.
I can represent a whole number using different combinations of ten thousands (grade 5), thousands, hundreds, tens and ones.

Standard Form:
The most common way to show a number is using numerals.
E.g. 4398 or 12 492

We can describe a number many ways. For example:

2300 can be described as 23 hundreds or 230 tens.
30 000 can be described as 3 ten thousands, 30 thousands, 300 hundreds or 3000 tens.

Expanded Form:
We can also show a number in expanded form by decomposing it into different places. We can represent numbers MANY ways.

We can use base-ten blocks. It is important when sketching blocks to draw the blocks proportional to each other. You shouldn't draw a ones block (small square) as large as a hundreds block.

Sometimes it is easier to place blocks, digits or counters on a place value chart.

You can also regroup or trade to show a number in expanded form different ways.

When you express a number in expanded form, you show the value of each digit.

5628 = 5000 + 600 + 20 + 8 or 5 thousands + 6 hundreds + 2 tens + 8 ones

It shows greater understanding (and thinking) if you are able to express or rename a number different ways:

5628 = 4000 + 1600 + 10 + 18 or 3 thousands + 26 hundreds + 28 ones

It's also teaching you to use mental math strategies to add to make sure your expanded form actually does represent the number.

We saw how this can be important when dealing with money. The greatest value of Canadian a bill is $100.

If you do not have time to play a review game in the evening, bring it home another day to practice. So far, grade four should have brought home one review game and grade five two review games. Unfortunately, our laminating machine at school is not working. Cards have not been laminated so handle them with care. Thank you for carefully cutting the number cards.

Religion
This week we began our brand new Religion program "Growing in Faith, Growing in Christ". I'm looking forward to journeying with you through this wonderful program. I can't wait to see the symbols that you have drawn on your cross to show your life story.... your faith, family and friends.

Share with a parent the symbols that Fernando Llort created on his painting and their meaning.

Social Studies
Our first unit in Social Studies is Canadian Government and Citizenship. We will focus on local government. This fits nicely with the upcoming municipal election.

During our introductory lesson, we talked about the responsibilities of a government, the levels of government in Canada and the rights and  responsibilities we have as citizens. We also noted that Canada's aboriginal peoples have three levels of government as well.

Do you remember the three levels of government?

What are the three groups of aboriginal peoples in the Canada?

What questions do you have about government?

What names do you see on the signs around your neighbourhood?

Today we began talking about local governments. One of the big ideas of this chapter, is understanding that every issue in a community has different perspectives or viewpoints.

  • Thank you to all students who submitted verification forms and money for agendas.
  • Please let me know if you are unable to download the School Messenger App. Our class code is ANLFKZ. Feel free to pop by and we'll try to troubleshoot any difficulties.
  • Cross country practices are scheduled for Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Don't forget your gym clothes. Tuesdays and Thursdays are our gym days. Time permitting, we will go to the gym on the days we do not run.
  • Math Calendar for the week due Friday.
  • Cross due Friday
  • Dot Day on Friday
  • Back to School Meet and Greet is scheduled for Thursday, September 20th.
