Math

There are a few Mathletics assignments involving adding decimals. DO NOT USE A CALCULATOR. These questions are pencil and paper practice. You must write them VERTICALLY You can apply addition and subtraction strategies (mental math) we have talked about in class.

Mental Math Addition Strategies

Making Tens

37 + 43 = 30 + 40 + 10 (7+3) = 80

Making Friendly Numbers (give and take)

39 + 47 = 40 + 46 = 86

Doubles or Near Doubles

39 + 39 = 40 + 40 - 2 = 78

Decomposing Numbers (place value)

54 + 28 = 70 + 12 = 82

Adding in Chunks

67 + 19 = 67 + 10 + 9 = 77 + 9 = 86

Mental Math Subtraction Strategies

Adding Up (changing subtraction to addition)

55 - 18 

18 + __ = 55

18 + 2 = 20

20 + 30 = 50

50 + 5 = 55

The answer is 2 + 30 + 5 = 37

Subtracting in Chunks:

61 - 28

61 - 20 = 41

41 - 8 = 33

Renaming Numbers / Keeping the Same Difference

91 - 38 (add 2 to each number to make an easier question)

93 - 40 = 53

80 - 51 (subtract 1 from each number to make an easier question)

79 - 50 = 29

For all strategies knowing your basic addition and subtraction facts to 20 is IMPORTANT. You will not be able to use most of these strategies without that knowledge.

Example:

If you know 12 - 5 = 7 then logically 62 - 5 = 57

or

If you know 7 + 8 = 15 then logically 47 + 8 = 55

At first you may need to write your steps down on paper. After a while you'll write less and less steps and eventually you'll be able to do the questions entirely in your head. The curriculum expectation is 2-digit addition and subtraction using mental math.
